Chapter 24

I stare at the BlackBerry phone in my hand like it’s an alien. What was he doing calling me twelve times last night? Upon closer inspection I see he called between the hours of ten and two a.m. That’s when I was in the kitchen playing Spades while my phone was in here on the charger, and I didn’t hear a thing. When I came back into the room last night, my only thought was of going to bed, so I didn’t even look at my phone. This guy is acting kind of weird.

I shake my head, set the phone down on the end table, and stand up. I bend over, touching my toes for thirty seconds, and then reach for the sky, giving myself a good stretch. James may be acting weird, but it shouldn’t affect my day.

“Hey, baby,” I say when I open the door to the hallway. Jay’s carrying Jamie in one arm with Jaslene playing at his feet. “What time did you get up?”

He smiles grimly. “Didn’t really go to sleep. I stayed up with Kayla for a while, then Malcolm showed up, so I had to lock the door behind them.”

I smiles softly and take Jamie out of his arms. “Maybe you should have another manager open instead of you today then. If you’re so tired.”

He shakes his head, and I follow him into the living room. The sun has barely climbed over the horizon, and only a faint bit of light shines through the balcony curtains. He sits down on the couch and scoops Jaslene into his lap. “I’m good. I’m used to it. Now, when I’m forty or fifty years old, then yes, someone else can open, but I’m not planning on staying up that late when I’m that age.”

I laugh and sit beside him with Jamie in my lap. “I wonder what age you’re gonna start balding.”

“Girl, shut up. Ain’t nobody thinking about that,” he says, touching his head slightly.

“I’m just playing. You always look sexy to me.” I kiss his cheek, and the corner of his mouth turns into a smile.

“I love you,” he says.

“Love you too.”

We smile at each other, and I lean to kiss him deeper on the lips. After a few moments he pulls away and looks into my eyes. “Can I ask you something?”

“Yeah, sure,” I say, looking up at him with wide eyes.

“Why do you think I proposed to you?” he asks, his face dead serious.

I pull back a bit because I’m taken aback by his question. I really didn’t expect that one. “Because you love me, right?”

He nods. “Yes.”

I don’t say anything so he can continue, but he stares at me with sad eyes, and I don’t know why he’s doing this. “What’s wrong?”

“I was talking to Kayla last night, and she told me that you didn’t think I would have proposed if James never called you and asked you to go away with him.”

“Oh. Yeah, but she told me I didn’t have anything to worry about.
